Chapter 5.1:
Side Story: The Independent Sprint

Self Employed (Jakarta) - November 2023 - Present

TL;DR

Since November 2023, I have kept a parallel freelance lane open under my own name. I do this selectively. The goal is not to collect random side projects, but to stay sharp in different environments and keep solving product problems outside a single company context.

Independent work usually starts the same way: a team is shipping against a moving target, the frontend has drifted, and they need someone who can make decisions quickly without waiting for perfect conditions. That might mean tightening component boundaries, building a feature from scratch, or translating a messy operational process into something users can actually navigate.

Freelance work has also been a useful forcing function for communication. In a short engagement, there is not much room for vague technical taste. You need to understand the business quickly, narrow the scope, make the architecture legible, and leave behind something the next developer can keep moving forward.

Keeping this track active has been good for my main work too. It exposes me to more codebases, more constraints, and more ways teams get stuck. The recurring lesson is that clean execution usually comes from clear product thinking, not just cleaner code.
